Path of healing

We are biological, psychological, social, and spiritual creatures. When these aspects of ourselves are not in balance, sickness occurs. Mostly, we ignore and/or have forgotten our spiritual selves.
A holistic understanding of health understands the interconnectedness between our body, mind, and spirit. Emotional trauma can cause inflammation of the lung’s airways and other organs. Emotional disturbances can dysregulate the autonomic nervous system. Stress affects the body’s immune system. Epigenetics shows that emotional stressors can have negative effects on gene function.
The path of healing is the one that leads us into alignment with our spiritual being. Singing can bring us home to our spiritual self. So can gardening. And meditating. And joyful movement. Lots of things. We each get to choose our own adventure back to our whole, healthy self.
So why’s it so hard to heal, to feel fulfillment and peace? According to Toltec tradition, we are addicted to suffering. Ego will react, No I’m not. My invitation to you is to notice the possibility that addiction to suffering exists. For now, just notice. Become aware of it. Whenever thinking along the lines of why does this always happen to me/I never get chosen/FML cross your mind, just slow down and notice the thoughts. No need to berate them, just notice.
Buddhist tradition tells us to comfort and express compassion to those thoughts as if they’re a baby. If we’re able to get out of our heads, suspend our ego, and actually feel compassion for these thoughts, for these habitual energetic patterns that move through our bodies, we begin to be able to dissolve them with the higher frequency of compassion. We begin to heal from the inside out.
