Being a DJ at a bar who gets the dance floor going, or a drummer who rocks, were two ongoing dreams during my twenties. Life happened, as it does, and the fantasies faded. Then as I was driving in the car a few weeks ago, The B-52’s “Rock Lobster” played. The thought, I wish I could drum crossed my mind. Then, as if my thoughts were heard, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” played next. I mean, COME ON. Not only are the drums uplifting, the song’s association with Rocky III in a moment of comeback are seared into the collective. A sign from my guides. Thank you!
When I got to where I was driving (a storytelling show whose theme that night was Magic-hello!), I told a friend that on the way over I decided 2026 will be the year I learn to play the drums. I did that because I know the power of speaking words out loud. And guess what. I’ve started. To play. Really basic coordination exercises while listening to a metronome, but I’m on my way. And I’m so excited!
I’ve decided play is my overall word for 2026 as well. From an energy perspective, play’s frequency is up there with joy and love. Holding a high frequency of play while working and writing creates an expansive environment filled with possibility for flow and collaboration. Let’s go!
