On children
I got goosebumps the first time I heard “On Children” by Sweet Honey in the Rock. I was in college at a concert for the all women’s a cappella group on campus. That was 26 years ago, long before I had words or understanding for all the systems of the unseen energy that caused me to be emotionally moved.
I was in a first “Holistic Health” session with a young person yesterday. I always begin by telling them that part of my work is helping grownups and young people care for and balance the mind, body, and spirit. We talked about exercises to strengthen all these parts of ourselves, then practiced exercising the spirit with some intentional art and singing bowl play.
We chatted about the visible and invisible parts of our selves. This is how I enter conversations about energy with kids. Helping them to understand how something unseen can affect our physical body (e.g. hurt feelings) and get stuck in our chakras, helps them begin to build an energetic hygiene practice that can prevent constant nervous system overload.
I love being around kids, because energetically, they tend to be more tapped in to source. And yet, already, they’ve accumulated lessons and experiences that make it challenging to fully embody their soulful/true/divine self.
It’s my hope that by raising their energetic awareness and giving them tools to use to support the unseen parts of their selves, that in 10 years when they’re at a concert and are moved to tears by the beauty of what they feel with all their senses, they’ll savor the sensation and chalk it up as one of the infinite examples of how life is miraculous.
